AUTOMOWER® Frequently Asked Questions
How does a robotic lawnmower work?
Automower® maintains your lawn everyday. The mower operates from a base station located near the house. At appointed times, the mower leaves the station and begins mowing. When the battery needs charged, the mower finds it’s home on it’s own. Automower® knows it’s boundaries via an installed low voltage wire around the perimeter of the property and around obstacles.
Does it take a lot of time to own and operate Automower®?
No. Automower® is very simple to operate and you continuously get a good result with limited effort. Once you have installed Automower®, it independently ensures that your lawn is well cut, with limited involvement from you, whether you are at home, in the office or on vacation. With Automower®, your lawn will always remain well maintained, but you do not perform the actual task of mowing.
What effect does the Automower® have on the environment?
Since Automower® runs on batteries, there are no emissions generated by the mower. The energy consumption is extremely low. Depending on the size of your lawn, the mowing cost is between $10 and $50 per mowing season for the electricity consumed.
Is it easy to use?
Yes, very easy. The control panel is easy to understand and operate, once in use Automower® can be left to its own devices.
Can it handle all types of lawn shapes and sizes?
In principle, yes. If you can mow it with a normal mower, then Automower® can mow it, too. The convenience advantage may be diminished in a very complex yard with large obstacles and small patches of lawns not connected to each other. During the installation process, you will outline the areas the mower will not cut, such as flowers, bushes, trees and rocks.
What is the maximum operational area for the Automower®?
Automower® can handle lawns up to 1.25 acres depending on the model and complexity of your yard. For over 1.25 acres, two or more Automowers can be used.
If I want to use it at my summer home or share it with my neighbor, can the Automower® work at two different locations?
Yes. If you buy two charging stations and two loop wire cables, you can have two separate installation sites and use the same Automower® in both locations.
Is it noisy?
Not at all. The sound level of Automower® is very low, ranging from 69 dB(A) down to 58 dB(A) depending on the model. Traditional mowers generate an average of between 95 and 100 dB(A) of noise. You can easily have the mower working in your yard without disturbing you or your neighbors.
How does it handle very long grass?
If the grass is very long and thick, you should raise the cutting height and gradually reduce it to the preferred level. In very extreme conditions, the lawn may need to be cut by a normal mower before Automower® takes over.
Will it cut in all weather conditions?
The mower is designed to function in temperatures up to approximately 113oF. The NiMH battery capacity is lower in hot conditions. As a result, Automower® will charge and mow in shorter periods, though the mowed area remains unchanged (models with Li- ion batteries are unaffected by temperature.) Also, Automower® is designed to handle wet conditions, though you should bring the mower inside in extreme weather.
Will the mower cut the grass in rainy conditions?
Yes, Automower® is supposed to cut grass in all types of weather and is designed to handle wet conditions well. It is however recommended to bring the mower inside in extreme weather conditions, such as torrential rain and storms.
What are the benefits of mowing the lawn in a random pattern?
By mowing in a seemingly random pattern, in various directions, you will achieve a carpet-like lawn. For 20 years it has proven to be one of the most reliable ways to cut your whole lawn, leaving no uncut grass.
Will I still need an ordinary lawn mower?
Not anymore. However, we recommend you complement your Automower® with a weed trimmer or edger for a perfect finish.
How do I install the Automower®?
You can easily do the installation yourself (learn more about how to install the Automower® at husqvarna.com). Just follow the instructions in the operator’s manual. It takes about 2-5 hours, depending on the size and complexity of your lawn. Your local Husqvarna dealer may also offer an installation service.
Do I need to bury the wire in the ground?
No. The wire can be laid on the ground using the supplied staples. In a few weeks, the wire will disappear into your lawn. Remember to cut your lawn as short as possible around the perimeter in order to get the wire as close as possible to the ground. However, if you wish to bury the wire from the beginning, you can. The suggested depth is 1-4 inches.
What are the benefits of a boundary wire system defining the cutting area?
It is a very robust and reliable system, making sure the mower always stays inside its boundaries, in all weather and yard conditions. It is also very intuitive to set-up and install, should you wish to make changes to your yard or garden the wire is easily moved or relaid.
I have a nice flower bed and trees that I want to protect. Is that possible?
Absolutely. If the boundary wire has been installed correctly around your flower bed, tree, shrub, or other objects, Automower® will not mow in the restricted areas.
Will the Husqvarna Automower® cope with my uneven lawn?
Due to the large driving wheels and good product balance, Automower® can cope with uneven surfaces very well. New models can handle slopes up to 45% (24°) incline. Only small deep holes may cause Automower® to get stuck. It is small enough to follow the curvature of a rough lawn and will not scalp the “hills” like many larger mowers at the edge of the lawn and by objects. Automower® handles up to 15% (9 degree) incline.
Does Automower® have a theft alarm?
Yes. Automower® has several theft protection systems that may be activated. Most important, Automower® cannot be used without the personal PIN code. Automower® also has these features:
• The installation lock prevents Automower® from functioning on any other installation than your own.
• The time lock requests your four-digit PIN to be entered at an interval decided by you.
• The alarm requires the PIN code to be entered when Automower® is stopped – or an audio alarm will go off.
• The Automower® Connect unit includes a GPS tracker available as an accessory for the 430X and comes standard on the 450X.
Can children play on the lawn when Automower® is working?
Even though Automower® operates on low power, you can still cut your fingers or toes if they come into contact with the cutting blade. A built-in safety feature means the blade will automatically stop if the mower is lifted up or turned over. The distance between the outer body and the blade tip is also extra-long to avoid feet or hands from accidentally reaching the blades. For safety reasons, we recommend turning off mower when small children are playing on the lawn.
Is it potentially dangerous to cats and dogs?
No. Our experience shows that pets will usually respect Automower® and leave it alone. The mower is equipped with sensors so that when it runs into an object such as pets, it will reverse itself and choose another direction to mow. If it does collide with a pet, the contact is very light and unlikely to cause any harm.
What about pine cones, tree branches and fruit on the ground?
To maximize the life of the blades, these types of objects should be raked and collected regularly. They will not damage the mower, but the blades will wear out faster. Tree branches may also damage or bend the blades resulting in a poor cutting performance.
Can it detect objects such as clothes or toys lying on lawn?
No. It is up to you to keep the lawn surface object free. Any object that is small enough for Automower® to pass over may be damaged, as well as cause damage to the mower’s blades. Make sure your lawn is clear of small objects before operating the mower.
How do I maintain the Automower® to keep it in the best condition?
Your mower is a very low maintenance machine, but replacing blades regularly is vital for the best cutting results. Every now and then, depending on your lawn size, you should spend a few minutes cleaning the grass from the wheels and chassis.
Do I need to store it inside during the winter?
Yes, if you don’t have to mow in the winter. Before putting Automower® away for the winter it should be cleaned and wiped dry and then stored in dry, frost-free conditions. We also recommend that the charging station is stored indoors over the winter. The loop wire installation should remain in the lawn and is not affected by varying weather conditions.
How do I maintain Automower® to keep it in the best condition?
Replacing blades regularly is vital to maintain an excellent cutting result. Depending on your lawn size, you should spend a few minutes cleaning grass from the wheels and chassis.
What’s the lifetime of the blades?
The life of the blades depends on the type of soil and grass. Typically, the life is 1-2 months for a .25 acre mowing area. The lightweight blades are super easy to replace. You can replace them in five minutes using a regular screwdriver.
What’s the lifetime of the battery?
This depends on the mowing area and running time of the mower. If you run your Automower® 6 months a year on an area of 8,600 sq. ft., your battery will last 2-4 seasons. In order to save your battery, you should set the timer according to the size of your lawn. During the dry season you can easily reduce the running time without losing performance.
